Delta

The Son

Delta is an armed police response unit whose deployment brings overwhelming force into the novel’s conflicts over trafficking, prison corruption, and the limits of police authority. Its masked, heavily equipped officers can break into a room within moments; Simon’s effort to send them without following authorization procedures exposes the institutional safeguards that are supposed to govern that power.

Role and Equipment

During a raid at Ila Centre, Martha hears that armed personnel are entering the building. She encounters officers in black uniforms and masks, carrying shields and guns, as they move toward room 323. They use a battering ram to breach the door and an explosive device to enter, then order Martha to move back. The scene presents Delta not as an ordinary investigative presence but as a force prepared for an armed operation, whose equipment and coordinated movement dominate the centre’s corridors.

The Raid at Enerhauggata 96

Martha carries a card that she has kept in her jacket and uses it to make a call after the officers enter the centre. Elsewhere, Simon calls Sivert Falkeid and asks him to dispatch Delta to Enerhauggata 96, pressing for speed despite the late hour. The call places the unit at the centre of a parallel attempt to reach the address, although the cited material does not establish the outcome of that proposed dispatch.

Authorization and Institutional Limits

Pontius Parr refuses Simon’s request to authorize a Delta raid. He says the grounds have not been properly justified, the necessity has not been explained, and Simon has not gone through the proper channels. Simon replies that Parr can authorize the operation, but Parr maintains his refusal. Their exchange makes procedure a substantive constraint: urgency and access to a senior official do not, by themselves, establish grounds for deployment.

The conflict also distinguishes the unit’s capacity from the authority to use it. Delta’s presence at the centre is described through the officers’ weapons, protective equipment, breach, and entry, while Simon’s separate request is challenged on procedural grounds. Together, these episodes connect the unit’s formidable operational force with the question of who may lawfully direct it.
